ALFRED UNIVERSITY is a four-year comprehensive university. It is part private and part public, including the internationally-known SUNY College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Alfred University was founded as Alfred Free Academy in 1836 and chartered as a university in 1857.               ALFRED STATE COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY was originally a part of Alfred University. It separated from the university in 1948 as a fine two-year college of agricultureand technology. Today it also contains some four-year programs, and is part of the SUNY system.
